Surround Sound Test 5.1
Test Surround Sound in Windows 7. Windows 7 supports surround sound in either 5.1 or 7.1 speakers. The 5.1 speakers have a six-speaker configuration which includes the left, center and right front, the subwoofer and the left and right rear.

You need to ensure that the audio id definitely Dolby Digital 5.1, not just 'surround' sound. Don't forget in the app or controller you can select About My Sonos system and find the Playbar and it will tell you the format of audio being received (That output from About my Sonos doesn't update if you change the audio - so need to close and re-enter that menu if you change anything.
Most streaming video apps for TV channels/networks don't stream in surround sound (can't speak for all of them though, some might). Make sure that your XBox One is set to output audio to the Optical connection, not HDMI, and that it's Bitstream with Dolby Digital selected as the Bitstream format. Then put a Blu-Ray movie in your XBox One, download the Blu-Ray Player app if you don't already have it, and enjoy the movie. As far as XBox One apps go, I know that Netflix, Amazon, Vudu, and Plex (if you have a Plex media server) will all stream 5.1 audio if it's available in whatever is being watched.

I have tested using the same method (YourTube and Disney WOW) with my Onkyo 7.1 home theater and it worked perfectly. Now with the Sonos 5.1, I can not hear the base nor the left and right rear channels. While i was testing with Xbox1, the audio was coming from the tosh link cable since it was directly connected to the play bar. I can hear from the left and right rear speakers but i'm not sure if they are 'Surround' sound. That's an indication that you need to check what each device is sending out to the TV. Each one should have an 'audio' settings page, make sure they're set properly.
Of course, each device's settings page is likely in a different place, otherwise life would be easy, and fun. I've just gone through this myself, having gotten a new TV, and suddenly found out last night that the optical out was set to PCM, rather than Bitstream. Sonos does a fair job of interpreting that stereo signal into something resembling Dolby Digital, but since all of my devices inputting to the TV are set up to use Dolby Digital, I'd prefer the TV to just be passing the same data out.

I just finished tweaking my Amazon Fire TV and Samsung BluRay player. I was able to get 5.1 Surround from Amazon Fire TV but apps such as YouTube and Netflix on Fire TV stick can only output stereo. From the BluRay player, I have an option to set to PCM and Bitstream with both setting output stereo sound. Seems like I need to get another device to get the surround sound. Any suggestion on a device that can output 5.1 surround on Youtue, Netflix, Kodi or any other 3rd party video players?
HDMI pass thru surround system was so much easier compare to this. Yea, you've entered in to my 'I have a minor amount of knowledge, just to be dangerous' zone. I'd listen to many of the others here on these boards who have run into this issue. Their experiences will be ultimately more satisfying than any guesses that I would make. There are a lot of posts about devices that will take inputs, be they HDMI or other, an then do some transcoding, and provide an output that's Dolby Digital (I think). But I can't point to one that I am confident, having no experience whatsoever. So I'll bow out of this thread, and allow others who have more expertise give you their opinions and knowledge.
Best of luck! Airgetlam wrote: Yea, you've entered in to my 'I have a minor amount of knowledge, just to be dangerous' zone. I'd listen to many of the others here on these boards who have run into this issue.

Hi all, it has about a year i am running windows 10, mostly the system is running great, but i have been waiting for microsoft to fix the sound issue, i did try all the fixes out there and i still do not get the 5.1 surround sound, both digital and analog connections. Is there a chance that microsoft will ever look into that problem or shall i just roll back to windows 7 in which i had no problems at all? And for the headset the mic refuses to work with windows 10 as well.
In case you want my PC specs are as following: Asus X-99-A Intel i7-5820 3.3Ghz 16GB 2300Mhz DDR4 120GB SSD 1TB seagate 7200rpm 500GB seagate 7200rpm Audio devices: Denon AVR 1610 spdif connection 5.1 speakers Roccat Kave 5.1 surround headset (analog connection). Hi Jeka, There are some reasons why you don't get the 5.1 surround sound. Best regards. Hi, i am using different type of files and tried a veriety of programs. Most test files i downloaded from mysurround.com which has test files with a surround sorce coding. I have tried reinstalling the latest drivers for the system and it didn't work. Did try moded drivers which should of make it work but it still doesn't. And i did try the same drivers on wibdows 7 virtual machine through WM ware and the thing is that it does work on windiws 7 OS.
Basically i am clueless of what else i could try so it would work, as i believe i have tryed about 90% i have found on the internet including those on Microsoft's website sorty that i can't give you links to all the solutions i have tryed. I had everything working before. The only thing thats changed over the last ten years in my htpc is the operating system upgrades. Not sure at what point dolby digital stopped working as i havent had my speakers all set up in 3 years (bought a house and just got around to setting up all the speakers in my living room), but when i play a video all i get is logic 7. I can hear DD in the sound settings when i “test” the speakers, all five make a sound, but movies revert to 2 channel, all of them, ive tried a dozen different movies, three different players, checked all settings numerous times. Then i read some posts and realized a lot of people with windows 10 are having the same issue.
And then the idiots like yourself that ask, ‘are you sure you have a DD source, certain video types, you need hardware to support multi channel surro.’ Blah Blah Blah. You mentioned that you haven't used your speaker for a long time and your computer installed many system updates. Just to clarify, is the sound card of your computer also updated? The sound card driver of your computer may be outdated that is why the surround sound function is not working when watching movies.
We recommend that you check the support website of your sound card to see if there is an updated driver software. If so, we recommend that you install it so that the surround sound will function properly.
